The Basics...

If you're new to roleplaying, or don't have much experience, keep reading! Even if you are a veteran you should still keep reading! Even the best of roleplayers can often forget the simple fundamentals of roleplaying and it never hurts to freshen up...

  • Roleplaying is acting. The definition of role-playing is... acting a particular role. When we roleplay will assume the role of a character in a fantasy setting, in this case the Warcraft Universe. There are a few fundamentals to learn when assuming the role of a character, these will be covered in depth shortly.

  • When you roleplay chances are, you will not be alone. Your actions in character and out of character will directly effect other people. With this in mind... Think before you act. This goes for both in character, out of character, and on the forums. In my experience roleplaying, I have seen my share of fights both in and out character because people don't think about what they're saying before they say it. Every once and awhile, take a moment to think about how or what you're doing is going to make an impact on the people around you.

  • In all my years roleplaying I have received two very important tips that have made my roleplaying experiences all the better. The first of these is... Don't try and be yourself. While at first it may seem logical or while other guides may suggest to stay true to your inner being when playing a character, don't. In the long run you'll find yourself struggling to step out of your comfort zone and become your character. When making a new character, don't make the character like you. This is your chance to be whoever you want to be and live that role. So do it!

  • The second of those two important tips I learned and the golden rule of all roleplaying is... This is just a game. As par definition with 'game' we are meant to have something called 'fun.' Now, in light of this recent revelation, have fun! Even if your character is mortally wounded or even killed, don't take it personally, you're still alive! Too many people want to turn to complaining and fighting to keep their characters alive instead of just going with it. Roleplaying is not going to be all sweet and happy. There will be dark times, people die, you may die. Don't try and ruin half of the roleplaying experience by trying to keep your character alive. We all know you love your creations very dearly, this is what makes losing them all the more painful. Yet, instead of getting ticked off and down in the dumps, take it as an opportunity to further a plot line for somebody else. There is more than one way to return to life in World of Warcraft and there's always an adventure to be had when you're trying to restore your friend to life or get revenge on the dastardly foe who killed your friend! I want to see people die! (In a nice way.)

The Do's and Do Not's of Roleplaying...

So we've gotten the fundamentals down or we've brushed off the old cobwebs. Now it's time to get into roleplaying! When starting a new character or, returning to an old one, keep the following in mind.

  • Start with getting a feel for the game and for the lore. This can be a life saver for anyone, new and old, experienced and beginner, in any sort of game. When making a character, know the lore that applies to that character. It can include physical appearance, customs, culture, notable past events, heroes, religion, etc. This is not to bore you to death and scare you away from roleplaying. This is to simply get your surroundings and get your bearings on your character. The Warcraft Universe has a lot of background to it, there is a lot to clearly define what each race, class, and organization is. Your best friend at first will be WoWWiki (wowwiki.com). If you're unsure on something, type it in the search box and you'll be sure to get some answers. If you don't get the answers you're looking for there...

  • Ask questions! Nobody knows everything and we all make mistakes. A good roleplayer will have no problem explaining something to you if you aren't sure. There's a lot of friendly voices on Ventrilo as well that'd be more than ready to tell you what you need to know. Remember to be polite and ask nicely. Nothing makes more experienced roleplayers feel better than too see a newer roleplayer trying to actually learn how to roleplay. It may even be a good way to hook up with a new group of buddies!

  • Make a history for your character. This doesn't have to be done right away, but you need to be thinking about it. After all, unless you're roleplaying a baby, your character probably has a little bit of a history. This history can define who that character is. As you get more comfortable with the Warcraft theme, start exploring what's happened in the past. There's more than enough opportunity for adventure back there somewhere.

  • Don't make your character to powerful or too weak. We all know which pole we tend to drift towards. I can tell you right now, the vast majority of a certain server population is at the top. If you try and deny it, I will call you a liar. (A friendly liar of course. Very Happy) Before you try and convince yourself that being all powerful is what you truly want, slap yourself (not too hard) in the face and tell you, "No!" Being too powerful or too weak is boring. Yes that's right, you heard me. If your character can vaporize an army with the flick of his/her wrist, people aren't going to want to play with you. Worse yet, you'll convince those people that power is what they want as well. Before you know it, the entire server is running around with God-like characters that don't fit in anywhere. Story development and good roleplay requires conflict, and around your character that will last very short. Whether you're strong or weak, it's just bad all together. The best advice when making a character is: be realistic, modest, and reasonable. Have some strengths but don't forget to include the weaknesses! It's easy to list off things that our characters do well! However, it takes a true roleplayer to list of bad qualities and then deal with them. This next part is important...

I want everyone to look at the characters you have created right now, and come up with five or more weaknesses he or she possess. I then want you to send me a private message on the forums letting me know that you've found these five or more weaknesses and that you'll alter your character, no matter what seat of power he or she may be in, and play the character with those weaknesses. You don't have to tell me what those weaknesses are, I just want to know that you've found them. If you're having difficulties coming up with five or more weaknesses? Feel free to PM me again asking for assistance. I will be completely impartial when helping you come up with weaknesses. In no way shape or form will I use the information you've given me, or allowed me to develop, to my advantage.

  • Get familiar with your character, become your character. This may seem bizarre and difficult at first, but it'll help. Take some time to truly think of a personality for your character. I then want you to have a discussion with your character and find out how he or she emotes. Find out what makes your character tick; what motives them, what drives them, how they react to different situations. You'll often be forced into unknown and unexpected situations and you'll have mere seconds to react. When you truly know your character, you won't have to ask yourself these kinds of questions. It will come naturally with time, trust me.

  • Be sociable with your character. Don't start out with the lone wolf that stays away from all forms of society. Against common belief, it is harder to play a loner type character well, than it is a character who is a member of society. If you spend all your days sitting on the outskirts of society being by yourself, you'll soon find out that playing that character is not very fun. You'll logout and go to a new character. The goal of roleplaying is to interact with other players and play out the reactions of your characters to events occurring in game. Anti-social characters are extremely difficult to roleplay well and harder still to roleplay and have fun while doing it. I won't get into the definitions of anti-social characters as not to tempt you however, playing an evil character is among these anti-social characters. Roleplaying an evil character is an advanced concept that is only truly enjoyable for the roleplayer and the people around him/her, when the evil character is a roleplayer with experience. There is nothing wrong with being good-natured, or even neutral. Start simple, but be social.

  • Do not be too detailed and explicit with your character when dealing with strangers. In real life do you tell your whole life's story to someone you've just met? If you do, disregard what I am about to say. If you do not tell much about your character, or only reveal little bits at a time, you'll still have a chance to alter your character as you go to better fit the setting. Nobody gets their character down perfect the first time through so don't stick yourself to the consequences of your own history by spilling it all out in the first go. Furthermore, give yourself something to fall back on if things get rough. If you're completely out of ideas on what to say or what to do with your character, having those little stories or pieces of information from your past are always handy to get rid of those awkward silences.

  • Wait, wait well. This is the hardest thing to do for any and all roleplayers; getting into the game. If you're new to the server or you've made a new character there may be tons of plot lines, story arks, etc, that have been occurring while you have been gone. You have to be patient for other players to notice you and begin interacting. It can be as simple as looking for anybody in the OOC channel who is not currently roleplaying at the time. Sometimes all you have to do is announce yourself as a newer player looking for RP and you may be invited to a group of people currently roleplaying. If these two don't work, look for a public gathering place. What these places may be vary from time to time. Once there look around for people roleplaying in groups, or another person by him/herself. Ask them privately and out of character if you can join them in roleplay. Sitting there acting like a loner will not get you involved in the roleplay. You must actively go about seeking other players to roleplay with if you expect to roleplay. Whatever you do, do not jump into a current roleplay session without announcing yourself. If you want to try and insert yourself into a roleplay session, do it subtly. Have your character sit on the side and listen in on conversations, throwing in a remark every once and while. Sooner or later people will start to include you in your conversations, much sooner if you don't overdo your actions in character.

That's all I have this week folks, I'll write add onto this on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. I know it may be a lot to read but it's well worth the gander. Enjoy your roleplaying Rebels!

Added a small section at the end on God Modding. Plan for a clean-up and re-release when I get the time.

Scyon's right. White Knight Syndrome needs to be addressed. It's impossible to be able to save everyone.

White Knight Syndrome? I'm afraid I am not properly acquainted with it. Could it be a close cousin of the Knight in Shining Armor Complex?
